At the beginning of the trial, test subjects were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups or a control group and assayed for blood lipids and other cardiovascular disease (CVD) biomarkers. Unfortunately, staying healthy and disease free may be more complicated than just achieving a normal body weight. Recent evidence shows that more than half of people who have achieved their ideal body weight according to medically accepted standards may suffer from a condition called normal weight obesity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How do you know if you have normal weight obesity? Normal weight obesity applies to those people who have a normal BMI or body mass index but still have a high percentage of body fat. Both BMI and body fat percentages can be measured by various means to determine whether you meet the criteria for normal weight obesity. Body fat percentages of greater than twenty percent in men and thirty percent in women are considered to be diagnostic for this condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why is the issue of normal weight obesity so important? Studies have shown that people who have a high body fat percentage are at a higher risk of heart disease even if their body weight is normal. They’re also at higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome which increases the risk not only of heart disease but of type 2 diabetes. In fact, normal weight women who met the criteria for normal weight obesity had a three times increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome when compared to women with normal weight and a normal body fat percentage. They were also four times more likely to develop heart disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Body fat percentages can be measured by using a simple set of calipers available from various online sites, although the accuracy of this method has been called into question. There are also special scales that not only give you your body weight, but also measure your body fat percentage. These, too, may have varying levels of accuracy. There are other more reliable means of measuring body fat percentages which can be performed at health clubs and by certain medical facilities. In general, if you can pinch more than an inch of fat at the waistline, your body fat percentages are high enough to qualify for normal weight obesity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fortunately, many of the risk factors associated with normal weight obesity can be reduced with diet and regular physical activity. A combination of a calorie reduced diet along with fat burning, aerobic exercise several times a week supplemented by strength training can help to reduce body fat percentages and modify the risks associated with normal weight obesity. These are all great, low calorie, high nutrient choices. You top it off with several scoops of the ranch dressing. You just turned your healthy lunch into a calorie laden fiasco. At this rate, you could have saved calories by ordering the burger and fries. Don’t let the salad dressing blow the health properties of your salad. If your favorite restaurant doesn’t have a low calorie dressing alternative, bring your own from home or use lemon juice and a little low calorie sweetener. Never let the restaurant put the dressing on the salad themselves. Ask for it on the side.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hidden calories: Beverages&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In some people’s minds, what you drink doesn’t count as calories. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think you’re drinking healthy when you drink those presweetened bottles of tea? Some of them have as many calories as a soft drink. By the time you guzzle three bottles a day, you could have had an additional meal. Instead, drink iced tea with non-calorie sweetener or water with a bit of lemon. Why waste calories on tea?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hidden calories: Sauces and gravies&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may pat yourself on the back when you order the fresh catch of the day along with a vegetable. Not so fast! If the fish is served with a heavy sauce and the vegetables drowning in butter, you may not need dessert to blow your diet. Some cream based sauces are frightfully high in calories and fat. When you order in a restaurant, ask for the sauce on the side so you can dip your fork into it to get the taste. Ask for your vegetables steamed with minimal butter or oil.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don’t let those sneaky hidden calories derail your weight loss attempts. Scrutinize the menu at a restaurant or fast food establishment and be aware of what you’re ordering. It is characterized by eating uncontrollably, quickly eating an unusually large amount of food at one sitting, even when the person is not hungry, and eating in secret because the person is embarrassed about the amount of food he/she eats.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;More women than men have binge eating disorder, and most of the people who have it are overweight or obese. People with bulimia may also exercise intensely for long periods of time in attempt to burn off the extra calories taken in during binge eating, or they may go for long periods of time without eating. Many bulimics do a combination or all of these things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bulimia affects more women than men and more young women in their teens and twenties than older women. These women are usually obsessed with their weight and truly believe that they are overweight even though most have a normal body weight. It can cause a number of serious health effects, including anemia, dehydration, heart problems, ruptured esophagus, stomach ulcers, and even death. Like binge eating disorder, bulimia is treated with therapy and medications.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Anorexia Nervosa&lt;/strong&gt; - On the opposite side of binge eating is anorexia nervosa. Many of them look emaciated, but they’re convinced they are fat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because anorexics literally starve themselves, their bodies are severely depleted of nutrients. As a result, they develop muscular atrophy, dehydration, low blood pressure,and brain and organ damage to name a few. As many as 10 percent of anorexics die. Most anorexics deny they have a problem until the problem gets so bad that they have to be hospitalized. Because anorexia is so life-threatening, the first stage of treatment is getting body weight back to normal.
